Welcome welcome to Erika Zorzi and Matteo Sangalli, better known as Mathery who've shared their Quick Fire Fifteen with Adelphoi!
Mathery are an Italian directing duo with a background in design and photography. Their work turns simple, everyday life upside down to form tongue-in-cheek worlds of humour and breath-taking art direction. Having worked for brands such as Amex, Facebook, GoPuff, Ikea, Klarna & Orbitz; the pair excel in creating abstract universes with their talents spanning various mediums and disciplines from film to photography, as well as space and object design.
Mathery’s strong personal and professional relationship since meeting at university has enabled them to bring to life their unique creations as independent artists, working in Australia, Asia and Europe. Alternating between personal independent projects and directing commercials, the duo sees each scene as an opportunity to observe the world we know and transform it into one we don’t, one that’s filled with mystery, irony and satire.
Caviar have recently welcomed Mathery to their London, Amsterdam, Paris & Brussels rosters for commercial & music video representation.
1. What was the first record you bought?
Erika: after having inherited my dad’s vinyl record player and all his collection of Italian cheesy love songs compilations I desperately needed some punk rock vibes and picked The Undertones at a Milan vintage flea market without knowing them well back then, but my second one was still Mina’s.
2. What bands or artists are you listening to most right now?
Matteo: 070 Shake, I’ve discovered her with the album 'Modus Vivendi' and since then I became a huge fan. If you are into FVP drones and you need something to keep you focused while soldering it’s a no brainer.
3. Your favourite podcast?
Erika: Bunga Bunga. It’s about that funny guy who is Berlusconi and his life, being told from an American perspective is what makes it so interesting to me, made me realize not only how many facts I knew “slightly differently” but how even crazier certain things he has managed to achieve sound when heard from an external voice untouched from the Italian protective media.
4. What was the last gig you saw?
Matteo: Kevin Morby - OMG this was before covid- shame on me, it might be time to plan the next one.
5. Favourite music video?
Erika: Fatboy Slim - 'Praise You'. It was just so simple and iconic, so much humor is trapped into this and watching it just now gave me the same feelings. I love the performance- guerrilla-flash mob approach and the low-fi execution makes it even more special.
6. What song gets you dancing in your living room?
Matteo: 347 Aidan - 'Memories'. A Canadian rapper born in 2003!! He kind of reminds me of Lil Peep (who I loved so much R.I.P)
7. Favourite movie and soundtrack?
Erika: 'Pulp Fiction' clearly doesn’t need any explanation, and Gaspar Noe’s Climax has such an immersive soundtrack that together with the visuals has literally the power to transport you in the scene, it’s really experiential.
8. If you could direct a music video for any artist or band, who would it be?
Matteo: Tommy Cash. It will take a miracle to direct one of his mind twisted songs also because he directs most of his stuff but it will be an honor to join forces and create something incredible. Tommy we are waiting for your call.
9. Film director idol?
Erika: Quentin Tarantino.
10. What can’t you live without?
Matteo: Tissues.
10. What are you reading at the moment?
Erika: Guide to California.
11. What are you watching at the moment?
Matteo: John Wilson’s 'How To' - it’s kind of a must watch for New Yorkers and we are finally digging it after so many people recommended it.
12. Brand you would most like to work with?
Erika: Our aesthetic is so highly curated in lots of details especially when it comes down to styling, whether is building characters with tons of personality or creating pleasing- color balanced visuals with our actors' outfits… but we have never directed a project for a fashion brand so definitely a “Gucci” is on our top list!
13. Greatest influence on your career?
Matteo: Bruno Munari (October 24, 1907 in Milan – September 30, 1998 in Milan) I’ve discovered his master mind while studying design in Milan and since then he became one of my favorite artists, he’s a designer, a illustrator, a teacher, a storyteller… from lamps to kids books I’ve always been inspired by his cleverness.
14. What band / artist is your guilty pleasure?
Erika: Lana Del Rey - Just when I am driving in the highway in Italy, windows up, sunglasses on. Followed by Princess Nokia and Alanis Morissette. Yes, eclectic mix right??
15. Is there anything you want to tell us about?
Erika & Matteo: We’d love to invite you to watch a project that is almost a year young- it’s called Felicitazioni and it’s a photo romance that lives on instagram stories, divided in 5 acts- we are the protagonists, it’s a love story, that becomes creepy, curious and fun. @felicitazioni_romance (spoiler alert, don’t scroll just go through the story in the Highlights!)
