Original Composition | Client: Rustlers / Agency: Droga 5
Introducing 'The Seas Between Us' the first feature length Hamburger biopic, created by Rustler's to mark the 150th anniversary of The Hamburger.
Conceptualised by Droga5 and directed by Katharina Behrens through Lief, the 72-minute art-house film explores the life of German immigrant Otto Kause from Hamburg and his estranged son, who claim ownership of the Hamburger’s true origins. "He recounts his birth, which followed his father Otto's decision to "liberate" the German people from the "bourgeois tools" of cutlery and encase hamburger steaks with buns; his rivalry with Hot Dog in the US; the frauds who claimed to be his father after he became famous; and how he teamed up with Cheese."
We collaborated with the talented film composer and producer Jonny Poole to create an original jazz score for the film which was almost entirely improvised on the day of recording. Premiering at the famed Berlin arthouse cinema Babylon, The 'Seas Between Us' is now available to stream in full on Amazon, while the full soundtrack can be found on Spotify .
Speaking of the process; Dan Morris, creative director at Droga5 London, said: "The process of creating from scratch a legitimate piece of arthouse cinema was daunting enough. Then we realised, to be true to the idea of the hamburger being created in Germany, the film also had to be in German. Which none of us spoke. Some might say that it was an insane thing to undertake. Those people have obviously never worked on Rustlers.”
